15 Feb E60 M5 E38 Brake Swap : The Brake-In
Remember the E60 m5 E38 brake swap we talked about on a few days back? Well, it’s made its way back to the front page of the Fluid MotorUnion blog.
Last time we checked in on the E60 M5 E38 Brake Swap project, the brakes had just finished their test fitment, and everything was looking to fit well. On top of looking good for fitment, the E60 M5 brake components also looked a little less-than-shiny, so all the brake components were put through the vibratory finisher to strip off their old paint and begin anew. Well, today’s post is all about our attempt to begin anew. For starters, we had Luci spray the caliper-related components in a classy yet stealthy gloss black. The color in the paint room is not conducive to photography, so it’s actually darker than it came out in the photos (and this is post-Photoshop, as well):
While this was happening, Tom painted the rotor hats in the same shade of classy black, after removing the rust that developed on the rotors during storage:
Apparently this old photographer was a bit slow this morning, as they managed to reassemble the entire brake setup and start the test driving before the afternoon started. The test driving is still continuing, so photos haven’t been taken of the new brake setup without wheels yet, but since there’s a parking brake issue that needs to be worked out, the wheels wil be off again soon, and pictures will be soon to follow. For the time being, though, we managed to snag some shots of Fluid MotorUnion’s latest out-of-the-ordinary swap through the wheels:
As you can see, the new brakes fill the wheels almost entirely, leading anybody outside the vehicle to wonder exactly what’s hiding beneath those wheels, and underneath that hood. We can tell you firsthand, the answer to those questions is “something wicked.”

Amazing work as always. Quick Q; did the front wheels need to be spaced at all to clear the calipers?
Looking forward to more updates on the E38!
Thanks,
Mike

Posted at 10:13h, 09 MayNo, Front wheels cleared calipers ok, no spacers needed. However getting them to fit on the hubs was the tricky part. Check out here and here, as we further explain.

Posted at 05:28h, 10 MayThank you so much for your response. These are going to be even trickier to fit my E39, due to the different centre bore, but knowing E38 Paras clear them was the last thing I needed to know before committing myself!
Thanks again, and I look forward to more blog posts!
