Maserati GranTurismo Exhaust Upgrade: Megaphone & Dyno Proven Gains

The FMU Megaphone – our secret weapon is available for purchase HERE

The Maserati GranTurismo S is one of those cars that can stop you in your tracks long before you even hear it. With its hand-built 4.7-liter cross-plane V8, it carries an unmistakable Italian identity—equal parts art and engineering. But beneath its timeless design lies a frustrating truth: the GranTurismo platform has extremely limited aftermarket support. Simple bolt-on performance parts are scarce, leaving tuners and owners searching for creative solutions to unlock hidden potential.

Finding Power in the Details

At Fluid MotorUnion, the team set out to explore whether a few key exhaust modifications could bring new life to the GranTurismo S without overhauling its entire system. The challenge was straightforward: improve tone and performance while keeping the car’s elegant OEM layout intact. The plan? Add custom-fabricated megaphones to the front section of the exhaust while retaining the existing Lauri X-pipe and factory rear mufflers.

While Ferrari’s flat-plane engines are known for their high-pitched scream, Maserati’s cross-plane V8 offers a deeper, muscle-inspired growl. The goal was to amplify that personality—enhancing low-end torque and creating a fuller, more exotic exhaust note without introducing rasp or drone.

Custom Fabrication and Fitment Challenges

Turning that vision into reality required patience and precision. The team designed and built custom flanges, hand-formed tubing, and megaphone transitions to ensure the system integrated seamlessly with Maserati’s tight underbody packaging. Every curve and weld was shaped to maintain flow while preserving ground clearance and service access. Fitment was critical—this wasn’t a simple “bolt-on” job, but a tailored solution worthy of an Italian grand tourer.

Dyno Testing and Performance Results

With fabrication complete, the GranTurismo S hit the dyno. In its stock configuration, the 4.7-liter V8 produced around 304 wheel horsepower in Sport Mode. A standalone ECU tune added an impressive 23 wheel horsepower, bringing the total to approximately 327 WHP. But once the custom megaphone downpipes were installed and paired with the tune, output climbed to roughly 349 wheel horsepower—a gain of about 44 wheel horsepower naturally aspirated.

Beyond the numbers, the change in sound was dramatic. The megaphones deepened the tone and enhanced throttle response, creating a rich, aggressive growl without harsh resonance. The car now delivers that unmistakable Italian emotion every time it starts or accelerates, turning heads for all the right reasons.

Sound, Style, and Substance

The upgraded GranTurismo S now embodies everything enthusiasts love about Italian performance: elegance, sound, and spirit. The megaphone exhaust enhances character without compromising drivability, proving that with the right approach, even a platform with limited support can achieve exceptional results.

Owning and modifying a Maserati is not about chasing record-breaking horsepower. It’s about celebrating craftsmanship, driving feel, and the soundtrack that connects car and driver. The Maserati GranTurismo S reminds us that true performance isn’t measured solely by numbers—but by emotion.
